There was a time in the not-so-distant past when diesel-powered passenger vehicles almost non-existent in North America; the prevailing opinion stated that diesels were loud, unreliable vehicles that smelled bad and created too much smoke. While these things might have been based in truth once upon a time, recent advancements in “clean diesel” technology are bringing these vehicles back into prominence with automakers.

For every nugget of true information about diesel passenger vehicles, there are completely untrue myths circulating wildly; for example, the idea that diesels are worse for the environment is patently untrue, despite the claims of many old wives’ tales. In fact, the increased fuel efficiency means that diesels emit less carbon dioxide per mile traveled than a comparable gasoline engine. Also, the fuel economy of a diesel vehicle will often surpass the expectations printed on the window sticker, sometimes by several miles per gallon.

Despite the high fuel efficiency of diesel vehicles, savings at the pump might be a bit more complicated than you expect. Because diesel fuel tends to be slightly more expensive than gasoline in some places, fuel costs might be only slightly offset by the reduced usage. Also, though diesel engines tend to last much longer than their gasoline-powered brethren, they also require the same upkeep and regular maintenance. For higher-end German vehicles, the service costs can be significantly more expensive; however, the strong components and lubricating nature of diesel-fuel itself greatly reduce wear on the engine and can save thousands in repair bills.

Because the natural scenery is a huge part of what makes RV travel appealing, it’s important for RV’ers to keep the health of the environment in mind. Travelers should make sure to keep recreational vehicles on roads that it can navigate safely, and maintain the engines properly in order reduce emissions. Additionally, camping should be restricted to clearly marked campsites; recycling facilities and categories may be different from those you use at home, so it’s best to pay close attention to signage. Keeping disposable item usage to a minimum is a great way to reduce the amount of garbage you generate on the road. Packaging and excess materials should be discarded at home if possible; also, campers should be very careful about using fire to dispose of refuse. Items that will not burn, such as plastic and metals, should never be placed into a firepit. Additionally, carefully observing fire rules is imperative, as weather conditions may change the regulations regarding the building of campfires.

Saving energy and reducing usage of finite resources can also be as simple as configuring your RV’s placement on a campsite properly; natural shade and awnings can help keep your vehicle cool during summer months, while shielding from north and west-blowing winds can help you retain heat during colder ones. Labeling for tank additives and cleaning supplies should be read carefully in order to ensure earth-friendly ingredients; there are many options available to reduce your impact on the planet. In order to prevent damaging the bark of surrounding trees, it’s best to use a screw-in stake to restrain pets rather than tying leashes to the trees. The dump stations and showers provided by campgrounds should be left as you found them, with any messes that you made cleaned up before departing as a courtesy to other campers.

In the world of diesel-powered family vehicles, a few models stand head and shoulders above the competition. For instance, the Volkswagen Golf Wagon boasts an expanded interior over its last incarnation, as well as improved performance, superior handling and impressive fuel economy for a car of its size. The design and safety ratings also boost a Volkswagen’s appeal for families. These vehicles are relatively rare; finding one may require a bit of patience, but the return on your investment will make every moment spent searching well worth the effort.

For those in need of a bit more interior space, the Subaru Outback pluz PZEV comes equipped with standard four-wheel drive, a spacious cargo area and also performed well in crash safety tests. The comparative fuel economy against gasoline-powered SUV’s of its size is worthy of note, while the durable styling and reliable engineering can bring great peace of mind to owners. Even the base model offers an impressive 170 horsepower; more than enough to meet the needs of the average family. For drivers with an affection for manual transmissions, there is a manual Outback offering.

Another reasonably-priced smart buy is the Buick Lucerne, a great bet for those on the hunt for a full-sized four-door sedan of the diesel-powered variety. The front-wheel-drive sedan’s first priority is passenger comfort, with spacious seating and several carefully-designed features that make the Lucerne an impressively quiet offering. The higher-end models come equipped with some of the more modern features like lane-departure and blind-spot warning systems, but the base model is also a great option for those in the market for a diesel-powered sedan that runs quietly and offers passengers a high measure of comfort.

Though the focus of automakers in recent years seems to be trained on hybrid offerings, there are a growing number of indicators that attention paid to diesel-powered offerings is increasing. German powerhouse Volkswagen added the beloved Beetle to their already-impressive list of diesel options that include the Golf, Jetta, Touareg and Passat. In a surprising move, North American companies are stepping up to the diesel plate. Heavy-hitters like GM, Chrysler and Mazda all boast technologically-advanced diesel options, though their availability in Canada and the US is limited as yet.

On average, diesel vehicles boast about thirty percent better fuel economy than gasoline models of comparable size and power. Advances in diesel technology have also yielded offerings with less smoke and noise than older models, known as “clean diesels.” These advances are huge selling points for buyers seeking more fuel-efficient models.

Despite the higher pump prices of diesel, the number of North American drivers willing to consider buying a diesel-powered vehicle is up by twelve percent since 2006. The overall sales of diesel cars and trucks rose twenty-seven percent in 2011; experts also predict a significant spike in diesel popularity with the 2013 model-year offerings. Sports car giant Porsche is expected to unveil the diesel Cayenne SUV in April; luxury manufacturers Audi will also be adding a diesel-powered version of their perennial favorite A8 sedan, the next Q5 crossover and the A6 sedan. Jeep, Chevrolet and Cadillac are among the North American automakers expected to unveil new diesel options as well.

Choosing a recreational vehicle seems like a fairly straightforward task to the uninitiated — at least, until they actually begin the search. With so many available options and features, finding the right model to suit your needs can be a daunting task indeed.

Motor homes are grouped into three classes: Class A, Class B and Class C. The first option, a Class A motor home, is a bus-type motor home with a boxy design. RV bodies built onto a van-style chassis are called Class B motor homes; the Class C variety is an RV body on a truck chassis with the cab of the truck sticking out from the front of the structure.

For beginners, the Class C is a great starter motor home; they typically have many great features for a relatively low cost, and are a good introduction into the world of recreational vehicles. For the most avid and devoted RV fans, however, the Class A coach is the preferred option; the increased space and amenities, not to mention the view from the front window are all motivating factors even before the question of fuel and power come into play. Class A coaches allow the buyer to choose between gasoline and diesel engines, which is a very important aspect of the decision-making process, due to the increased fuel economy and performance of diesel models.

Many Class A coaches are referred to as “diesel pushers” because of the powerful diesel-powered rear engine similar to those used in eighteen-wheeler trucks. For lower-air-density travel, such as through desert areas or high-altitude mountain ranges, the sheer power of diesel engines make them the ideal choice for recreational vehicles.
